Advent Week 4: Peace

Artwork by Korri Werner, Leslie Koch, and Ashley Stephen

For the final Sunday of Advent, we decided to do something a little different. Instead of doing a reading on stage, we chose to do a spoken work video with dance as the primary visual component. This project was super fun to work on and I’m so thankful to Korri and Moriah for their gifts and contributions. The video is below as well as the text from the poem. Thanks for stopping by. I hope that these Advent pieces have been encouraging and have, in some way, enriched your holiday. Merry Christmas!

Spoken word and music were written, performed, recorded, and mixed by me.
Choreography and dance performance by Moriah Werner.
The video was directed by Korri Werner and edited by me.

Week 4 – Peace

“Glory to God in the highest and on earth… peace.”

There’s a hum underneath everything that is tangible
An idea that rests in the crook of the mandible
With a bend and a breath
A gasp and a step
There’s a moment to sit
And the humming persists

But I’m busy

Obligations are a brain spec
A paycheck
A train wreck
And I love you God,
I do
But can I please get a raincheck

It’s a luxury to be busy and to choose not to see
All the stain and offense and the dark around me

I’m busy, I’m stressed
There’s pain and there’s death
And I know you came to give life
But that feels like a stretch
Right now
In the middle of this
With no periphery
With human vision
With a mind that eats its own tail
With a history that shows that I’m proven to fail

It’s a luxury to busy and to choose not to see
All the stain and offense and the dark inside me

But I know that you’re there

I know that you ask for a moment to kill
To rest and be still
To stop and to feel
To meet me in the humming
And to show me of what’s real

So remind me what’s real

There’s a baby in a manger
There’s a child speaking free
There’s destruction in the temple
And there is peace inside me

There’s a group of believers
There’s a man who can see
There is food for the thousands
And there is peace inside me

There is prayer in the garden
There is blood on the tree
There’s a stone rolled away
And there is peace inside me

You show love when I’m without
You give hope when I’m in doubt
You bring joy without permission
So bring peace here and now

For the daily distractions
For the internal demands
For the things I can’t control
And the things that you can
Bring peace

There’s a hum underneath everything that is tangible
An idea that rests in the crook of the mandible
With a bend and a breath
A gasp and a step
There’s a moment to sit
And your humming persists
