Advent Week 1 – Love

Artwork by Korri Werner

Many of you know that I’ve had the great privilege lately of writing for church. I’m continually thankful for the opportunity to explore new topics and try new things. I’m a faith based person so I would say (and hope) that anything I write is based in some kind of faith. For me, that is not always pretty or neat. I like to think that words about anger or doubt or fear or sadness are still coming from a place of faith.

I say all of that just to say that when I have the opportunity to write for a setting that is specifically God centered, I view that as a really cool chance to speak truth, whether personal or biblical. And no matter the topic, there is a real feeling of gratitude on my part that I’m allowed to express myself and share these words with others.

So… long intro, sorry. For Advent this year, Korri  (my wife) and I were invited to take a look at the themes of Advent and then do something creative with them on the Sundays leading up to Christmas. Truly a blank canvas with some direction, which I love. There are a couple aspects to how we’ll be celebrating and recognizing the season. For example, Korri and 2 other hand letter artists in the church will be collaborating and creating new art pieces that be will displayed during the service. My contributions are a few new writings, to be presented by different people in the church. I’ve included the first one below and will upload the others on each following Sunday. Enjoy, Happy Holidays, and Merry Christmas!

Love

“And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Your love is not timestamped
It didn’t start in December
Your love is non refundable
There’s not a receipt to remember
Your love is not conventional
It doesn’t fit a human mold
Your love is not a single act
Or a simple story told

So we wait patient on a prophecy
We disregard complacency
We illuminate symbolically
And find hope in the expectancy

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us.”

Your love is creative
Virgin birth
Your love is expansive
Heaven, Earth
Your love is inclusive
All are free
Your love gives perspective
Sees me for me

So we wait patient on a prophecy
We disregard complacency
We illuminate symbolically
And find hope in the expectancy

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

So we wait patient on a prophecy
We disregard complacency
We illuminate symbolically
And find hope in the expectancy
